Trump Orders Naval Blockade of Strait of Hormuz as Iran Vows to Resist

U.S. Central Command says blockade of Iranian ports will begin Monday; Tehran insists waterway remains open for civilian vessels
U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the U.S. Navy to immediately blockade the Strait of Hormuz, a dramatic escalation just hours after marathon peace talks with Iran temporarily collapsed in Islamabad. The move threatens to turn a fragile ceasefire into open confrontation over the world’s most critical oil chokepoint.
“We will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz,”
Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday.
He added that “no one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas.”

The announcement came less than a day after Vice President JD Vance left the Pakistani capital without an agreement to secure Iranian concessions on its nuclear program. Trump framed the blockade as a direct consequence of Tehran’s refusal to accept what he called America’s “final and best offer.”
CENTCOM Sets Monday Deadline, But With a Twist
The U.S. military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) translated the president’s social media pronouncement into operational orders. In a statement released Sunday evening, CENTCOM said a blockade of “all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports” would begin at 10 a.m. Eastern Time (1500 GMT) on Monday, giving the region barely 12 hours’ notice.
The order applies to “vessels of all nations entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas, including all Iranian ports on the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman,” CENTCOM said. However, the military added a crucial caveat: “CENTCOM forces will not impede freedom of navigation for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports.”
This distinction is narrower than Trump’s social media threat. The president had said any ship that paid an Iranian toll would be pursued and interdicted in international waters. CENTCOM walked that back, limiting the blockade to vessels heading to or from Iranian ports. Ships merely passing through the strait to other destinations will not be bothered.
The blockade targets Iran-bound traffic specifically, a surgical approach designed to squeeze Tehran without triggering a global supply shock.
Iran Draws a Line in the Waters of Strait of Hormuz
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Naval Forces issued a statement declaring that the Strait of Hormuz remains “open for the innocent passage of non-military vessels under intelligent control and management in compliance with specific regulations” of Iran.
Any military vessels that approach the strait, the IRGC warned, will be considered to be violating the ceasefire and “dealt with severely.”
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s parliament speaker who led the delegation in Islamabad, said after returning to Tehran,
“Such threats have no effect on Iranians.” “We will not submit to any threat. If they test our resolve once more, we will teach them an even greater lesson.”

“Enjoy the current pump figures,” Ghalibaf wrote on X, alongside a map showing gas prices near the White House. “With the so-called ‘blockade’, soon you’ll be nostalgic for $4–$5 gas.”
The taunt underscores Tehran’s belief that it holds the upper hand economically: a prolonged standoff in the strait will send fuel prices skyrocketing in the U.S., a politically toxic outcome for any president.
Tehran’s Military Brass Dismisses the Threat
Senior Iranian officials piled on, dismissing Trump’s blockade as little more than bluster. Navy Commander Admiral Shahram Irani called the threats “laughable,” adding that Iranian forces were already tracking all U.S. military movements in the region.
Quds Force Commander General Esmail Qaani said the U.S. and Israel would be expelled from the region “without any achievements,” just as they had been driven from the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb Strait by Yemen’s Houthi forces.
Mohsen Rezaei, a former IRGC commander and secretary of Tehran’s Expediency Council, delivered a blunt verdict: Iran “is not a place that can be blockaded with tweets and imaginary plans.” The U.S., he said, was “doomed to fail.”
Gulf Allies Keep Their Distance
Even Washington’s traditional Gulf allies are keeping their powder dry. Al Jazeera’s Zein Basravi said that no leader in the Gulf Cooperation Council wants to escalate tensions in the strait.
“During the course of the war, there were GCC countries saying they would commit to some sort of naval force or any efforts to try and open the Strait of Hormuz,” Basravi noted. “But now GCC leaders are unlikely to find anything that could escalate things further a good idea.”
Araghchi: ‘Maximalism and Shifting Goalposts’
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who was part of the Islamabad delegation, offered a post-mortem of the talks in a social media post. “In intensive talks at highest level in 47 years, Iran engaged with U.S. in good faith to end war,” he wrote.
“But when just inches away from ‘Islamabad MoU’, we encountered maximalism, shifting goalposts, and blockade,” Araghchi added. “Zero lessons earned.” He concluded with a warning:
“Good will begets good will. Enmity begets enmity.”
A Blockade with Built-In Risks
The blockade order puts the U.S. Navy on a collision course with IRGC patrol boats that have controlled the strait for weeks. While CENTCOM insists it will not impede ships heading to non-Iranian ports, the mere presence of American warships enforcing a blockade in contested waters raises the specter of a miscalculation that could shatter the two-week ceasefire.
Iran’s military has already demonstrated its willingness to challenge U.S. vessels. Earlier this week, Iranian speedboats reportedly shadowed American destroyers as they began clearing mines from the strait. The IRGC has also warned that “any miscalculated move will trap the enemy in the deadly whirlpools of the Strait.”
For now, the ceasefire, brokered by Pakistan on April 8, remains technically in effect. But Trump’s blockade order, set to take effect Monday morning, tests its limits. Tehran has linked its adherence to the truce partly to the reopening of the strait on its own terms, including the right to collect transit fees. Washington rejects any tolls as illegal.
Diplomatic Doors Left Ajar?
Despite the tough talk, neither side has completely shut the door on further talks. Vance said before leaving Islamabad that the U.S. had put forward a “final and best offer” and would “see if the Iranians accept it.” Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian struck a more conciliatory note on X, writing that an agreement “will certainly be found” if “the American government abandons its totalitarianism and respects the rights of the Iranian nation.”
But the blockade changes the calculus. What was a diplomatic impasse is now a naval standoff.
